Think you know your nutrition?


The following common lunch foods were scored (1-100) using the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System and posted on MSN today. Some will surprise you.....

1. Breyers Light Strawberry Nonfat Yogurt (99 NuVal), scored higher than Yoplait Light Fat Free Strawberry Yogurt (60 NuVal) or Horizon Organic Nonfat Yogurt Strawberry Fruit on the Bottom (30 NuVal)

2. Jif Creamy Peanut Butter (20 NuVal), scored higher than Jif Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter (7 NuVal)

NOTE: A No Salt Added, All Natural Peanut Butter (in the refrigerated section) scores as one of the highest (49 NuVal or more) over a shelf Fat Free or Reduced Fat Peanut Butter like mentioned above. I like "Parkers All Natural Peanut Butter" that can be found in the refrigerated section at COSTCO or Target. It's made with Peanuts and Salt - that's it - no added sugars or preservatives - and it's delicious!

3. Fresh Apple (96 NuVal), scored higher than Seneca Crispy Apple Chips Sour Apple (6 NuVal)

4. Oscar Mayer Virginia Shaved Ham (30 NuVal), scored higher than Hillshire Farm 99% Fat Free Honey Roasted Turkey Breast (22 NuVal)

5. Stouffer's Lean Cuisine Roasted Vegetable Pizza (23 NuVal), scored higher than Stouffer's Lean Cuisine Brick Oven Gourmet Mushroom Pizza (8 NuVal)

6. Kraft Singles 2% Milk American Reduced Fat Cheese (26 NuVal), scored higher than Kraft Velveeta Reduced Fat American Cheese (22 NuVal)

7. Kangaroo Whole Grain Pita Pockets (57 NuVal), scored higher than Weight Watchers Pita Pocket Bread (43 NuVal)

8. Hellmann's Canola Cholesterol Free Mayonnaise (18 NuVal), scored higher than Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise (2 NuVal)

9. Natural Ovens Bakery Nulti Grain Bread (60 NuVal), scored higher than S. Rosen's Klassic Wheat Oat Bran Buns with Multi-Grain Goodness (10 NuVal)

One important thing to remember is this; if they are lowering the fat, the sugar content is usually much higher. When in doubt, stick with natural, organic, reduced fat or light versions.
